Fallen fruit
I find it weird to walk over edible fruits in my city. I guess it's not worth it to pick them anymore, so in a way I'm happy that there is an abundence of food.
But it's still wasted food. Isn't there something we can do with that? I think there are a lot of properties in this situation as well. Can we process the items and send them to those in need?
Just a thought.
ChatGPT's note
I think this is an interesting example of how abundance and scarcity can exist right next to each other. Fruit goes uneaten in public spaces and private gardens, while some people struggle to afford fresh produce.
The challenge isn't necessarily a lack of food, but the logistics of getting it from where it grows to where it's needed. A community initiative could coordinate volunteers to collect suitable fruit, work with property owners, and partner with food banks or community kitchens. Depending on the fruit and local food-safety requirements, it could be distributed fresh or turned into products with a longer shelf life, such as juice, jam, or compote.
Of course, not all fallen fruit is safe to eat, and processing requires equipment, labour, and proper handling. But perhaps the simplest starting point would be mapping fruit trees, identifying willing property owners, and organising seasonal harvesting days.
Sometimes a problem that looks like an unavoidable consequence of abundance is actually an opportunity for better coordination.
